bath and vanity lighting tips

Keep these tips in mind when you purchase bath or vanity lighting to help elevate the look of your bathroom.

SINGLE BOWL VANITY

For ideal lighting for grooming, or applying makeup, place sconces on either side of the mirror. This helps eliminate shadows on your face. Ideally, they will be placed 28”- 40” apart and roughly at eye level or centered 66” above the floor. This will vary depending on your mirror size.

TWO BOWL VANITIES

If you don’t have enough space to mount sconces on each side of the mirrors; place vanity lights above each sink.

GENERAL LIGHTING

Include some recessed down lights in areas larger than 100 square feet. You can also use close to ceiling fixtures to supplement sconce lighting.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

Don’t forget to have some fun with lighting too! If you don’t want to mount lighting on your mirror consider using pendants to add some visual interest while still being very functional.

Lighting for Over a Dining Table

lighting-for-over-the-dining-table4

Thanksgiving has passed, and soon there will be many more holiday gatherings, which means you might be spending more time in the dining room. But the dining room is not only for the holidays, other activities, such as completing assignments, managing finances, or even playing card game may also take part in this room.

With various activities taking part in the dining room, it is important to choose the right fixture over a dining table to create ambient lighting and add a decorative element to the space.

Here are some tips when choosing the right fixture for over a dining table:

Height

The height of a ceiling is going to influence how high a fixture hangs above a dining table. To achieve the optimal lighting effect for an average height ceiling of 8 feet, a fixture should hang approximately 30 inches above a dining table.

If the ceiling is taller than 8 feet, an additional inch is added for every additional feet of height. Hence, if your ceiling is 9 feet, an inch would be added to the total space between the fixture and the table, making the space 31 inches. If the ceiling is 10 feet tall, the total space would be 32 inches, and so forth.

height-over-the-table

Size

The most effective method of figuring out the right proportion for a fixture in relation to the room is to measure the length and width of the room (in feet). The length plus the width of the room (in feet) is equivalent to the fixture’s diameter (in inches).

dining-room-size-to-fixture-diameter

Another method is to look at the smallest side (the width) of the table and account for 12 inches of allowance space. The appropriate diameter for a fixture is the difference between the table width less the 12 inches of allowance space.

The 12 inches accounts for the 6 inches of space from each end length of the table to the fixture.

This 12 inch rule also applies to round tables, in which the diameter of the fixture should be 12 inches smaller than the diameter of the table.

Styling

There are various methods to style lighting over a dining table. Here are a few options:

Use a single fixture over a dining table, such as a traditional chandelier or a linear fixture.

using-one-fixture

Use down lighting at the two ends of the fixture to balance the distribution of light.

using-one-fixture-and-downlighting

Use more than one fixture, especially if you want to use smaller fixtures, or have a larger table to cover.

using-multiple-fixtures

You can also use multiple pendants for a more adventurous way of styling lighting over a dining table.

Dimmable Option

Lastly, consider fixtures with a dimmable option. A dimmable feature provides flexibility in lighting output, and can set the appropriate mood for various occasions.

When you are ready to spruce up your dining room, our showroom has a variety of lighting to choose from and ALA Certified Lighting consultants that can help you choose the perfect fixture for over your dining table.

Captivating Foyer Lighting

Norburn Lighting Foyer Lighting

Underestimating the value of foyer lighting is like going on a date or an interview without
introducing yourself; you miss the opportunity of making a good first impression.

With Thanksgiving holiday fast approaching, make the foyer of your home a place that
welcomes and captivates your guests the moment they walk through the door.

1) Low Ceiling Foyers

In foyers with low ceilings, a flush-mount or semi-flush mount is a great way to add a decorative piece while keeping in mind any height restrictions.

The Autumn, finished in chrome, captures the appearance of frost that coats the branches in the crisp Autumn air.

2) High Ceiling Foyers

Taller ceilings allows for more grandiose scale fixtures that make a bold statement. The Glacier Ave Collection is more than twice the size of an average person, with a height of 156 inches or 13 feet.

LEDs are embedded in each crystal that cascades down to replicate the appearance of glacier ice.

3) Open Concept Foyers

The design of the Double Cirque embraces open concept design that welcome the eyes to different avenues of the home. This opulent chandelier is 4 feet wide, and made with hand forged steel to create an orbital structure.

With a long narrow foyer, you can use multiple fixtures to create a visual echo effect. The Lombard Street pendant is a two tiered beauty that is perfect for a narrow foyer with high ceilings. The graphite framing highlights exposed bulbs that suspend from various heights.

Mini-pendants are task lighting workhorses. They can define the mood of a room more because of their ability to create a focal point. Typically  low voltage halogen or  LED light sources that feature highly stylistic and elegant designs, mini-pendants command attention and fill a space with drama and beauty.

Pendant Light Use & Placement

Pendant lights are ideal for general, task, mood, and decorative lighting. Typically placed over a kitchen island, dining room table, game surface like a billiard table. They are also used in hallways. Below, we elaborate on the placement and usage of pendant lights in common areas.

Pendant Light Use & Placement over a Kitchen Island

Hanging Pendant Height KitchenTask lighting is important in a working room such as the kitchen. Pendant lights are commonly hung over kitchen islands providing adequate task lighting while also providing an opportunity to enhance the kitchen design.

When hanging a pendant light over a kitchen island, the pendant should be hung 30 to 40 inches above the island surface. Because kitchen islands are where family and guests gather, you should consider their interactions at the island when deciding on how low to hang your pendant. If the island has a cooking area, the pendant should not be a nuisance to the person cooking. If the island is used for homework or other work, the pendant should be hung low enough to provide sufficient light for reading.

Pendant Light Use & Placement over a Dining Room Table
DiningRoom_Pendant Height

Traditionally, a chandelier is used over a dining room table but you can change the  look and style by using a pendant fixture with dramatic results

Try hanging pendant lights so the bottom of the fixture is approximately 30 to 36 inches above the dining room table surface. This allows for maximum lighting without the fixture interfering with the area. If you have a smaller dining room table or are looking to create a more intimate setting, hang your pendant light lower. It is important to note that the fixture is not hanging so low that it creates a glare in your eyes or interferes with people conversing at the table.

Pendant Light Use & Placement over a Billiard (Pool) Table

Multi-light pendants are common pool table lights. When playing pool, direct illumination in addition to ambient lighting is necessary. Downward multi light pendants are the best fixture type to use because they illuminate the playing surface, eliminate glare and shadows and provide excellent illumination. When being used over a billiard table, the pendant light fixture should hang approximately 32 to 36 inches over the playing surface.

As people age, changes in vision occur that affect the ability to perceive and understand the world around them. For instance, there are normal age-related changes in the pupils (less light can enter the eye), the eyes’ accommodation speed decreases (it takes longer for eyes to transition to different light levels), and color perception weakens (yellowing of the lens makes it difficult to distinguish greens from blues).  Visit our FAQ of our website for more information and tips on lighting for the older adult, The Lighting Research Center (The LRC) a leading University based research center devoted to lighting research has created an excellent publication answering common questions about vision and lighting posed by older adults and offers practical solutions to help them, their families and care givers. It can be downloaded here
