CALX PENDANT

The Calx pendant has been an absolute hit in our showroom. The combination of the warm walnut wood, brushed brass and geometric shape are sure to make this pendant a focal point in any space!

Nick Sheridan, designer and a co-founder of Cerno states,

“The Calx is a nice example of modern design where the methods and the materials themselves are integral to its very conception, aligning form and function, which creates a synergy that is evident. The fixture ultimately forms a square aperture but enjoys a beautifully simple faceted structure.”

What's Old is New Again

Some of the best trends are from past eras that resurface and are redefined as current. Trends are cyclical, which allows us to integrate the beauty of past designs into our contemporary home. This coming season we are featuring items that give homage to past eras.

1900’s – Art Nouveau Movement

The popularity of crafted material was dominant during the early 1900’s, during which the Art Nouveau Movement occurred. This was a period that defied the sub-ordinance of crafted art, such as glass work, to other forms of art that was considered more superior, such as sculptural work.  Artists such as Louis Comfort Tiffany had a profound influence with this movement, which emphasized on the importance of craftsmanship.

The Tiffany lamps from Quoizel epitomizes the artisan work from this era, which the company has been perfecting since the 1930’s.

The table lamps are hand assembled using the copper foil technique introduced by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The Violet table lamp and Vintage Bronze Tiffany lamp are designed with a dome shaped shade that provides a spacious canvas for realistic sceneries of nature. The Violet table lamp has budding violets surrounded by a motif of green, yellow, red and tangerine glass.

Violets Table Lamp

The Vintage Bronze Tiffany lamp has the same dome shaped shade but with a soft scalloped edge that follows the movement of the leaves, and depicts a scenery of hummingbirds drawing nectar from a patch of flowers.

art nouveau

The third Tiffany lamp is finished in Russet, and has a more complex design due to the irregular shape of the shade. The trim of the shade also appears more rugged, and has a subtle branch that stems out from the crown and seamlessly blends into the mosaic of pastel glass.

These lamps have a sense of ornamentation that brings life to a room that cannot be ignored.

1930’s to 1940’s – Hollywood Regency/ Regency Moderne

The chandelier has been around for centuries, which attest to the idea of the resurgence of style.

The Regency Moderne style, in particular, was a hit around the 1930’s to 1940’s. Regency Moderne was inspired by the production sets in Hollywood that were lavishly decorated and over the top. This style incorporated a mix of Neoclassical, Art Deco, Chinoiserie and even had a hint of Modern influences. Dorothy Draper was an iconic figure during this time for her bold colour combinations and elaborate large scaled designs. This style allowed for combinations of classic furniture with pops of vibrant colour, luxurious fabrics, and ornate additional touches, such as the use of chandeliers.

These Schonbek fixtures exude the opulence of this style, enhancing the glamorous appeal of a room.

1960’s – Mid-Century Modern

The era of rebellion, the Sixties was considered the mod culture with iconic figures such as Jean Shrimpton and the Beatles that made a mark in popular culture. In interior design, David Hicks was highly idolized for his unapologetic use of bold colours.

The Sixties embraced futuristic designs, bold colours and patterns, and geometric structures. Homes were decorated to reflect the individual and was a platform for creative expression. The economic boom, growth in technology, and various social movements also had an impact on the lifestyle and the interiors of homes.

One of the most classic examples of mid-century modern design was the Sputnik, such as the Armstrong from Kichler, which is modernized with adjustable arms for variations in style.

The Sputnik lighting design was popularized during the Atomic Age, and was inspired by the SPUTNIK1 which was the first artificial Earth satellite to launch in 1957, and would later evoke the Space Race that dominated most of the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Here are a few more pieces that are reminiscent of this era:

The Domi by Dainolite also has the atomic and geometric form that was popular during this era.

This floor lamp by Dainolite has an asymmetric composition and contrasts matte black with vintage bronze.

Circular patterns—patterns in general—were used to make bold statements. The Charles pendant from Kichler has laser cut circular patterns that are reminiscent of this trend.

Autumn Inspired Lighting

fall-inspired-lighting-at-norburn-lighting

Why are we so infatuated with Autumn? Perhaps it is because Autumn gives us a sense of warmth and marks the beginning of festivities. Autumn is the season that kisses Summer into a deep slumber and anticipates the cool embrace of Winter. Known for being a well loved season, the distinct characteristics of Autumn can often be seen in various lighting design:

1) Being One With Nature

Bare branches, and graceful falling leaves are quintessential of Autumn, and gives a sense of tranquility. The Aldo (Eurofase), Tree Branch (Elk Lighting), and Aspen (Elk Lighting) represent nature during this transitional phase.
The Aldo highlights the beauty of barren branches as the sculpture suspends within an open LED frame. The Tree Branch lamp has a base resembling the roots of a tree, and the Aspen incorporates the raw texture of Aspen bark.

2) Warm Tones

Dusty cedar, hickory, tan, and other neutrals are often associated with Autumn, as well as warm metals such as copper, bronze, rust, and antique finishing.

These warm tones can be seen in a variety of fixtures, such as the Rebar Studio (Artcraft), Jersey (Artcraft), and the Swing (Progress).
The architectural use of rebar material, exposed pipes and exposed bulbs gives these fixtures an urban industrial appeal, and is further enhanced with dark metals and vintage undertones of brass and bronze.

3) Fabric/Texture

Thick fabrics, rich tones, and texture mark the beginning of “sweater weather” in Autumn. The Bali Chandelier (Maxim) and Kelp Mirror (Feiss) are reminiscent of “sweater weather” qualities.

The white inner shade of the Bali chandelier provides a soft backdrop for the woven string pattern replicating the look of a ball of yarn, while the Kelp mirror offers a unique textured frame similar to kelp.

4)Mix of Wood and Metal

The marriage of wood and metal symbolizes the Autumn activities that often take part outside the city limits. The wagon that carries the pumpkins from the pumpkin patch, or the barn that provides a dwelling space to escape the cold use a combination of wood and metal. The Collingwood (Artcraft), and the Fornes (Eglo) demonstrates two variations of the mixture of wood and metal.
The Collingwood pendant is finished in walnut and dark metal hardware, exuding a rustic appeal, while the Fornes embraces modernity with the use of clean lines, and LED technology. The Fornes also has a wood finish with steel hardware.

5) Reflection

The Autumn season also signifies a time of reflection, which is represented by the Autumn (Hubbardton Forge), and the Wicker Mirror (Dimond Lighting).
The Autumn pendant is a true reflection of the Autumn season, capturing the look of cascading leaves in it’s entirety. The Wicker Mirror offers a reflective surface, with a wicker designed frame that gives a nod to past decades.norburn-lighting-autumn-inspired-reflection

Though Autumn has a brief presence, you can find its qualities in a variety of fixtures and portables that will last beyond a season. Check out our showroom for more selections and the latest design in lighting.

Captivating Foyer Lighting

Norburn Lighting Foyer Lighting

Underestimating the value of foyer lighting is like going on a date or an interview without
introducing yourself; you miss the opportunity of making a good first impression.

With Thanksgiving holiday fast approaching, make the foyer of your home a place that
welcomes and captivates your guests the moment they walk through the door.

1) Low Ceiling Foyers

In foyers with low ceilings, a flush-mount or semi-flush mount is a great way to add a decorative piece while keeping in mind any height restrictions.

The Autumn, finished in chrome, captures the appearance of frost that coats the branches in the crisp Autumn air.
