Ceiling fans are versatile fixtures that enhance the comfort, beauty and value of the home. By itself the fan provides comfort by cooling in the summer and heating in the winter. Circulating the air in the room also reduces the energy costs of air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter by as much as 30% depending on the size of the room and the climate. Adding lights to the fan enables it to provide both comfort and ambient illumination. Larger than most chandeliers, an attractively styled and well made fan becomes a prominent furnishing in both public and private spaces in the home. Ceiling fans can be used in many rooms in the home, as well porches and verandas. Unlike lighting fixtures, ceiling fans contain moving parts - the motor and the blades it turns. The larger the motor, the stronger it is. Good fan motors have over 2000 feet of copper wire in the windings. The blades may be formed of wood, steel or plastic. To avoid warping , wooden blades should be laminated from thin slices of wood rather than constructed from a single solid piece. Each set of blades should be properly balanced to a very high tolerance so the fan turns evenly. Blades are pitched or angled rather than perfectly horizontal. This enables the blade to push more air. Pitches vary from 9 -22 degrees. The higher the pitch the more air will be pushed.
