Incandescent Lamp Legislation Update
Lamp Ban Myth
Starting 1st January 2011 in BC (2012 in the rest of Canada) new energy regulations are making some of the widely used incandescent bulbs obsolete. But is this the end of incandescent lamp?No not at all, the majority of lamps we use are not affected by this legislation, but the popular A19 lamp in the 100w, 75w 60w and 40w versions will be. New versions, more efficient versions will be introduced. These new versions will have a higher light output per watt of electricity used, we call this LPW (Lumen per watt).
Its all about Lumens Per Watt (LPW)
A standard 100w A19 incandescent lamp today produces 1700 lumens (light) for 100 watts of power (energy), therefore... 100/1700 lumens = 17LPWThe new energy regulations require a minimum of 20 LPW as the new requirement.

Standards for regulated general service lamps in BC & Canada.
| Current Wattage | Lumen Range | New Max Wattage | Minimum Lifetime | Effected Date In BC |
| 100 | 1490-2600 | 72 | 1,000 hours | 01/01/11 |
| 75 | 1050-1489 | 53 | 1,000 hours | 01/01/11 |
| 60 | 750-1049 | 43 | 1,000 hours | 01/01/12 |
| 40 | 310-749 | 29 | 1,000 hours | 01/01/12 |

*LED’s in current A type lamps do not exceed the light output of a 40w incandescent lamp.
*LED’s & CFL’s require special versions or special dimmers but some LED’s can use an incandescent dimmer.
*Light quality is based on CRI (colour rendering index). On a scale of 0-100, daylight is 100, halogen is 99, CFL’s & LED’s are currently around 80.
*Light quality in CFL’s can vary from 80CRI to 95CRI, check labelling before buying if you need colour quality.
*Very few studies are complete on the environmental disposal impact of LED lamps.
The details to consider.

Compact fluorescent lamps are the easiest choice to improve energy conservation. CFL’s have improved over the years. Improvements in technology have cut the amount of mercury dramatically and the colour/quality of light has improved as well. Mass adoption by commercial users has dramatically lowered the price also. The downside is that CFL’s cannot be used in all applications. They do not operate well if in a fully enclosed fixture, cannot be used in motion sensors, and while their colour has got better, they are |

Halogens will likely become the direct replacement for many of the current incandescent bulbs. The quality of light is very similar, halogen can be dimmed using a regular dimmer and is available in many shapes and sizes. The warmth of halogen is appealing to many of us as it ‘burns’ to produce light, just like traditional incandescents do. Halogens are not as energy efficient as CFL’s & LED’s but the technology has been improving. The introduction of “IR” halogens (Infrared) has improved their efficiency and will only further improve in the future. |

LED; availability, quailty of light, cost and consistency have all been drawbacks to LED’s . While LED’s energy efficiency has been rapidly improving, many questions still remain on how or when LED will be accepted by consumers. Just like CFL’s, LED’s are energy savers but there are many questions about quality and life span claims. LED’s do not like heat so enclosed fixtures present a problem. They are produced in colour batches, like paint, so qualtiy consistency concerns are a problem. We also don’t know what environmental impact LED’s bulbs will have. We currently have no official word from the Government on how or where we dispose of these lamps. |
